with the traditional wireless network, it is very difficult for anyone to seal your bandwidth but the big problem is that they can access network using your broadband connections. This method is known as piggybacking, it will increase your monthly bill when you have adopted pay per use plan.

sometimes, there have been a few instances where an innocent guy have been arrested for sending hate emails or unauthorized access to someone system when in reality their emails account and system were hacked through the unprotected wifi network.

It is very easy to protect your wireless network, which will prevent others from stealing your internet and will also prevent hackers from taking control of your computers.

Step 1 Open your router/modem setting page

You need to know how to access your wireless router’s settings page. usually, you can do this by typing 1192.168.1.1 into your browser after connected your router with pc through Lan cable.

in most of the case, this will work, if not then take help from google and find your router’s IP address.

Step 2 Set a unique password on your router

once you logged into your router, the first thing you should do is to change your default password to some more secure password. 

generally what hacker do is..they have the list of known passwords they apply Dictionary attack and find your password. 

Step 3 Change your network SSID name

The SSID or wireless name of your router is usually prefined as default or set as the brand name of the router. Changing your SSID name of your network is a good idea as it will make more obvious for others to know which network they are connecting to.

Don’t use your name, home address or other personal information in the SSID name.

there are many wifi scanning tools like inSSIDER (window) and KISMET(mac, Linux) are free and will allow anyone to find all the available wireless network.

Step 4 Enable network encryption

In order to prevent other devices in the area from using your internet connection, you need to encrypt your wireless signals. There are some encryption method under wireless settings, include WEP, WPA, and WPA2.

Aircrack is the famous tool that allows us to crack the WEP/WPA key using bruteforce or dictionary technique.

Step5 Reduce the range of wireless network

If your router has high range but your workplace is limited to some smaller area so you can decrease the signal range by changing the mode of your router to 802.11g from802.11n or 802.11b. Also, you can use a different wireless channel.

Step6 MAC filter

Every device has its own mac address which is unique just like every computer connected to the internet has a unique IP address. So you can set the mac address of all your device to your wireless router setting, this will prevent other devices to connect to your network.

Step7 Upgrade your router’s firmware

Do check your router’s manufacturer site regularly to make sure that your router is running the latest firmware or not. To check the firmware of your router goes to setting dashboard.

 

Step 8 check who is connected to your wireless network

There are many tools and software are available even for your android devices which can scan and check what are all devices connected to your wireless network. And then kick them out all unauthorized devices from your wireless network.
